Off to Tok today stopping only to get some christmas goodies at the North Pole. Just past that is "The Knotty Shop" featuring lots of knotted branches and stuff but also an amazing collection of stuffed dead things.
Also some rather amusing t-shirts (as if mosquitoes in Alaska are amusing)
Outside too are some nifty sculptures using the aforementioned knotted wood
Now just past Delta Junction is supposed to be a Bison Sanctuary. Didn't see any but did stumble across a moose just hanging by the road
The main water flows have subsided in most of the Alaskan rivers but this river is still flowing strongly and shows how big it would be at full flow. Most of these contribute to the mighty Yukon which is an immense river both in volume (6400 cubic metres per second average flow) and length (3200km). For those Aussie pedants out there, yes it is not quite as long as the Murray but that is a big river too.
Arrived at Tok which is really just a mid-way blip on the Alaska highway. Has some stores, gas stations, accommodation and gift shops. My choice is off the highway in the Caribou cabins. Quiet little wooded backwater but really nice cabins with a spa bath included.
And here is the author constructing this literary masterpiece with the aid of his favourite Alaskan beer!!
Tomorrow off to Dawson City via the Taylor Highway and Top of the World highway. Varying reports of what it is like so I guess I will see.
