The initial 68 miles are paved which was great. Several tens of miles of stunning scenery over hills and valleys to the Alaska range in the distance. Too hard to capture in a photo.
We then hit some dirt and shortly thereafter the town of Chicken. The story goes that the local wanted to name their town after the Alaska state bird the Ptarmigan but no-one knew how to spell it so the decided on Chicken. Pretty much a tourist stop with shops, cafe, gold dredge and panning etc. The bar has some peculiar items stuck to walls and ceiling from caps, tour guide badges, bras etc.
Chicken also hosts a music festival ("chickenstock"...hahahaha) and have gone all out on the stage.
They also have a list of distances to chicken-like named towns around the world.
Some more miles of narrow, roughish dirt then smooth out for a while and more asphalt.
Quite a few people panning/mining for gold along the creek to the side of the road. This guy has taken it to a new level for the amateur operation.
Finally got to the Canadian border post at Poker Creek. Very lonely place I expect but lovely scenery.
Just past the border post was a whole lot of little cairns. Not sure why but it is possible someone using the turnout was bored and built one (cause most of the rocks there are flat) and others followed suit.
Most of the 60 miles or so remaining was dirt but in good condition and then Dawson City appeared below.
Caught the ferry across the Yukon (the only way to get there) and checked into the hotel.
Next, exploring Dawson and doing the Sourtoe Cocktail!!!
